LOCATION

Zirje (North Dalmatia, Croatia) is an island located in Croatian region North Dalmatia, in Sibenik`s archipelago. It is located 22 km south-west from Sibenik. It is 12 km long with area of 15 km2. Only settlement on island is Zirje. Island Zirje has around 80 inhabitants. They are mostly directed to fishing and agriculture.

You can come to island Zirje by ferry from Sibenik. Island Zirje has many bays, islets, cliffs, caves and well-indented coast. Most known bays are Muna, Mikavica, Pecenja, Koromasnja.. Most known caves: Mala jama, Golubnica, Gravanjaca, Drazevica, Podvodnje. Island Zirje is composed mostly of limestone. Highest peak is Kapic, 131 m high.

HISTORY

Island Zirje was used as shelter for ships and for defense. Largest number of inhabitants was 725, before World War II. In 6th century emperor Justinijan built forts Gradina and Gusterna. In 1509. Croatian king Petar Kresimir 4th gave island Zirje to Benedictines. In 1323. it got under Sibenik again. In 1572. island was completely destroyed by Turks.

Island Zirje is very beautiful island with many natural beauties, clean sea and rich vegetation. Zirje is located near National Park Kornati, so you can visit it, as well as Sibenik and other nearby places. Inhabitants of Zirje offer accommodation in their family houses, apartments and rooms. For recreation you can enjoy in biking and long walks.
